For this project, this brief was to create a graphic language for the play adaptation of George Orwell’s book, 1984.
My approach explores the fragility of truth and the impact of psychological control within 1984. The spiral structure was developed to represent Winston’s mental decline, as well as the cyclical nature of history being continuously rewritten. Through the use of binary and repeated typography, I aimed to visualise the simultaneous encoding and erasure of information, acting as a digital interpretation of concepts such as Newspeak and Doublethink. The layering of words like ‘truth’, ‘lie’, and ‘control’ intentionally blurs meaning, creating a sense of disorientation and instability.
The cold, digital aesthetic reflects my intention to reinterpret Orwell’s dystopia through a contemporary approach, drawing parallels with modern systems of data manipulation and the authoritative presence of the Ministry of Truth.
